Dog Grooming, Tools, Tips, and Tricks

Grooming your dog is not an easy task. Depending on the breed of dog you have; one must consider the type of hair the dog has, the style that you wish, and how your pet acts when being groomed. I adopted a small breed, a Maltese, three years ago and I have groomed him myself and had him professionally groomed. He has gone from having long hair, like a show dog, to now having a "puppy cut".
Becoming prepared before you begin dog grooming is essential. Also, consider the time allowed. If you are a beginner, this will be something you need a couple of hours to do. Below are a few things I have found helpful to get ready before hand, and what to do during the grooming process.
Having Proper Dog Grooming Tools
  • Good quality clippers - This is the most important of all tools you will need. Don't go out and buy the cheapest ones you can get, here you truly get what you pay for. Also, make sure they come with different length or changeable blades. Plastic guards, as what you get with human hair clippers, simply don't work (this is especially true with dog's that don't have an under coat).
  • Pin Brush - These are great for long-haired dogs and helpful when brushing out tangles and mats. Be sure they have a rubber base on the pins for flexibility, as it is easier for you and more comfortable for your dog.
  • Slicker Brush - Great for finishing your dog grooming session, giving your dog a great look.
  • Comb - For use on the face of your dog, this tool is a must. It's easier to get around the eyes, nose, and mouth without injuring the dog like a wire pin brush could do.
  • Hair dryer - Good for drying long-haired dogs, but be sure to use a low warm setting as not to burn your dog. Also, always dry your dog's hair before cutting and brushing.
  • Finishing Spray/Detangler - Depending on the breed of dog, you may end up with hair that is not laying down properly due to static electricity and a good finishing spray will give it the perfect ending touch.
Preparing The Dog for the Grooming Session.
  • Fully brush your dog before giving them a bath. This will make bathing easier and when using proper shampoos and conditioners your pet's hair and skin will feel and look great.
  • Consider the shampoo you use. Many dogs are sensitive to the harsh chemicals in pet shampoos. Using all natural, oatmeal based, or hypoallergenic shampoos are the best.
  • Use conditioner. I have found that this is so helpful when brushing your dog during the drying process. The hair dries faster and is easier to brush.
A person to assist
  • Grooming the underside of the dog, inside of legs and arms, and grooming the sanitary areas is extremely difficult. If you get an assistant they can hold the dog in the air so this task so it can be done with ease.
  • Your assistant can talk to the dog, keeping it calm and distracting it while you are grooming.
Patience
  • Last and most importantly, take your time. Understand this is a stressful situation not only for you but for your pet as well. It's important to not go fast and cut or injure your dog, and you will inevitably need to do a lot of clipping and touch up work to get the look you are trying to achieve.
It takes me about 2 1/2 hours even with all the proper tools and the aid of an assistant to groom out Maltese. As stated earlier, our dog gets a "puppy cut" and I will continue clipping and touching up areas even one to two days later if I see something I missed.
I now give Whirly, my Maltese who is also the model at Whirly Dog Supplies, pet clothes and dog apparel online store, a "puppy cut" which both he and I enjoy the most, as it requires less to keep up between grooming sessions.
Just remember, dog grooming is a tough job but with time, patience, proper tools, and a little help from a friend of family member, it is so much easier and less stressful for you and your pet. I would love to hear the experiences you have had when grooming your dog and how you managed the task.

Advanced Obedience Training

If you have already trained your dog on basic obedience and want to find some training that is more advanced then here are a few suggestions of advanced training that you and your dog may enjoy. Advanced training isn't just for people who want to show their dogs it can be for people who want to have fun with their dogs as well.
One way to get some advanced training for your dog is by participating in the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. This is a program sponsored by the American Kennel Club. There are CGC evaluators in most communities that can help you with the training and administering the task when your dog is ready.
If you would like to compete with your dog in AKC obedience competition then seek out a trainer who can teach you the exercises that are required to compete in an AKC obedience trial. I have found that training your dog to this level is not only exciting but it's rewarding as well. Obedience trials are held throughout the country every weekend. Go to AKC.org and see when one will be in your area so you can see what it s all about. I really think you will enjoy it.
If you have a German Shepherd, a Rottweiler, Belgium Malinois or some other working type breed you might be interested in the sport of Schutzhund. This sport involves 3 different areas of training from obedience, tracking and of course protection. The actual trials are conducted all over the U.S. Actually it is a German sport and has been in this country many years. If you are interested Google "Shutzhund" and watch a couple of videos, you'll be hooked.
For those dog owners it want something a little bit calmer you might want to consider getting involved with therapy dogs. Therapy dogs are used in hospitals, children hospitals and nursing homes to bring joy to the people who are there. In fact therapy dogs are now used for other things as well including in reading programs for children and some therapists actually have therapy dogs in their offices to soothe their patients.
If you want to get involved with advanced training just for have a better trained dog or if you are looking for advanced training so that you and your pet have something to do together, I can assure you that it will be time well spent. Fundamental Ways on How to Effectively Train Your Pet

Do you keep a dog as a pet? If yes, you certainly have something to look forward to whenever you come home. A playful dog can indeed be a stress reliever for pet lovers like you; a happy bark from your pooch can take away the tiredness that you got from a nerve-racking day. Apart from that, dogs are loving and loyal. They can make great companions.
However, there are times when your dog becomes extremely playful; and its considerable amount of energy can lead to some adverse effects. For instance, your pooch might destroy some important stuff in your household, poop on your bed, or disturb your neighbors through barking excessively. For this, you would need to learn some training and disciplinary skills for your pet.
Are you looking for some tips on how to effectively train your dog? Well then, you're reading the right article. Below are some tips on how to succeed in training your pet:
Have the will to understand your pooch.
You can't really train your pet successfully if you don't have enough knowledge on dog behavior. Did you know that there is a meaning for every move and sound that dogs make? You have to understand such meanings in order to apply the appropriate training methods for your pooch. Talk to pet experts or read some self-help materials. Remember, it pays to be knowledgeable about the things you do. You can't just make a wild guess. You have to equip your mind with enough information.
Be flexible.
In training your pooch, you prepare to make necessary modifications. One training technique may work for one dog, but may not work for the other. Therefore, it is important for you to have enough flexibility in applying the appropriate training method for your pet.
Have enough patience.
Raising a dog is not an easy thing to do. It needs a lot of patience, plus love and understanding. When you decide to keep a pooch as a pet, you become a dog parent. Hence as a parent, it is your responsibility to take care of the overall welfare of your pet.
Be responsive to your pet's actions.
Whenever your pet does something bad, you have to let it know. Apply proper disciplinary actions and make sure to do them at the right time. For example, if your dog barks excessively, you should respond while it's still barking (You may also opt to use a bark collar for your pooch if it is aggressive). If you react after it barks, your pet might be confused. On the other hand, good deeds deserve some rewards. Hence whenever your pet does something good, you also have to let it know. Make your pet feel good about doing nice things by giving some treats. Remember, training your pet is not limited to correcting its mistakes. Recognizing its good actions is also a must. You are training your pet to behave properly; therefore, you must recognize its good deeds.
Have a sense of responsibility.
This tip encompasses the above reminders; however, if you keep in mind that you are responsible for your pet, everything else will follow.
Keeping a pet is not that easy. You must be mature enough to be a good dog parent. More than that, you should be passionate in training your pooch. If you can't do the tips discussed above, then owning a pet may not be for you.

Dogs are man's best friend. They are a good stress reliever and they are faithful especially if you give them the best care. Find out more about dogs in my website http://www.dogbarkcollar.org/. Learn more about it and other topics like Dog Bark Collar.

Dog DayCare - A Most Neglected Family Member Deserves A Treat!

Things You Should Know About Doggy Daycare. Just a few years ago, dog daycare was virtually non-existent and the idea seemed a little crazy. However, the times have changed dramatically since then. You can now find daycare facilities for him/her in many places. Sometimes it is a good idea to take a dog to daycare facilities but you should know that day care is not for every dog.
How to know if dog daycare is a good idea for your dog!
Whether or not a dog benefits from daycare has a lot to do with the dog's personality. Those that are playful, outgoing, sociable and require a lot of exercise will get the most benefit. Canines need exercise! Stimulation both mental and physical. It is a fact that very few get enough exercise and this could potentially cause them to become obese, develop bad habits, create unacceptable behaviors, or just go stir crazy. For some, especially adolescents and young adults, they can't stand being idle! For these canines, the usual half an hour of intense aerobic exercise per day is simply not enough, and when you go to work they quickly become bored and anxiety sets in. Dog boarding facilities are ideal places for those who like to be social. You should be careful not to take your dog to these places to socialize if he/she is not the social type. If he/she is not adequately socialized as a puppy, and therefore has trouble mingling with others, taking him/her to a hotel for dogs is not always a good idea. They will eventually develop social issues such as fear aggression and fear of other 4 leggers.
How to choose and use dog boarding to your advantage!
Doggy daycare facilities are good places to take your loving companion if you don't want to leave the dog all alone for the entire day. Sometimes people leave him/her at daycare facilities when they want some free time to carry out activities where he/she will surely be neglected. For other people, taking dogs to daycare is meant to deal with separation anxiety that affects many when the owners go to work, out with friends, go to movies, concerts, ballgames and leave the dog all alone. Remember, you owners have all of these things, your loyal companion has only you! Whichever the reason, there are several things you should do to make sure that the experience is good for both you and your most loyal companion. Before leaving a dog at a daycare facility, you should take a tour of the facility. Your main objective should be to find out how the dogs are treated and by whom. Ideally, dogs should be handled individually most of the time with the only exception being during playtime. You should also know how playtime is managed. For instance, are larger animals allowed to mingle freely with the smaller animals that might easily get hurt? You should make reservations in advance when you want to leave your companion at a sitting facility. Many daycare facilities are busy so you should book a spot at your preferred daycare facility well in advance. This is especially true for holiday seasons when a lot of people spend time away from their homes. A good daycare facility will be able to save you a spot on specific days of the week as per your schedule.
Precautions to take when using doggy daycare facilities!
You should always be aware that daycare facilities for canines receive many clients every day. Due to this fact, you should give the facility as much information as possible regarding your most loyal companion. This can only enable them to take better care of your best friend. It will also give daycare staff an easy time when dealing with unforeseeable circumstances that might come up! For example, you should always leave instructions for unique situations to the staff of the boarding facility. The instructions should be given when you make a reservation and you should also remind the daycare staff when dropping off. One special situation is when your dog is supposed to take certain medication. Also, if a special diet is required, you should tell the daycare staff. Keep in mind that a facility may not be equipped to handle some situations so you should confirm before bringing your dog. Another precaution to take when you are considering using a hotel for dogs is to make sure he/she is immunized. You should confirm that he/she has received all the necessary shots. When taking the dog to a daycare facility, you should bring proof of all vaccinations so that they can have it on file and also ask if all other dogs are vaccinated. It is recommended for you to give your dog medication for fleas and heart-worms before dropping him/her off. You should also avoid carrying your dogs pillows, blankets, or any other materials that may harbor parasites.
Final words
Daycare facilities for dogs are great places for dogs to get used to interacting with other dogs and people. These facilities are great places to take dogs for training, exercise, socialization and even separation anxiety. However, you should know that dog daycare should be used to supplement an existing training and exercise program that you use on your best friend. If you don't personally train and exercise your dog and instead rely on daycare facilities alone, he/she will no longer see you as the alpha dog which might cause him/her to behave badly when with you. If you rely mostly on daycare facilities for your dog, then it might be a better idea not to have a dog in the first place. It can be difficult to leave your dog in a strange place. However, if you check the place out ahead of time, it might help you solve the dilemma of neglecting your most loyal family member. Even though daycare facilities for dogs often take exceptionally good care of your buddy, you should avoid leaving the him/her at such facilities too often. Three days a week should provide noticeable positive results in behavior and over all physical and mental fitness.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy

When you get a dog, whether as a puppy or an adult, this animal becomes your responsibility. Most domestic dogs are unable to survive without the assistance of humans, and in addition to food and attention, the dog’s health will be one of the most important aspects of dog ownership. Always remember that dogs are unable to tell you when they are feeling ill or hurt, and some breeds are so stoic (mastiff breeds especially) that they will not show that they are in trouble until they are extremely ill. It is up to the owner not only to schedule vaccinations and checkups, but also to observe their dog for any deviation from normal behavior, even if slight.
When you have decided upon a breed of dog, it is definitely best to use a reputable breeder with a solid reputation. Make sure that you visit the breeder’s facility and meet the puppy’s parents; this will give you a good indication of the pup’s future temperament. I would also recommend looking over the puppy’s pedigree. Although many breeders extol the value of line breeding’ where cousins and sometimes siblings are bred to one another repeatedly, this is still inbreeding and can cause genetic problems such as hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand disease (a form of hemophilia), Cushing’s Disease, and cardiomyopathy. Make sure that the breeder’s dogs are as free as possible of genetic problems, and ask to see test result
The puppy you buy should have been wormed and received its first vaccinations. Observe the puppies at the kennel – the one you want will be sturdy in physical appearance and active. A hyperactive puppy will likely be a hyperactive dog and a puppy that hides rather than coming out to meet you is also exhibiting abnormal behavior. The mental health of the puppy is every bit as important as the physical, so a pup that comes out to greet you without being frantic about it is exhibiting normal, healthy puppy behavior.
Vaccinations against common and serious canine diseases are necessary from the time a dog is a puppy. Vaccinations work by using either attenuated or dead viruses or bacteria to ‘train’ the immune system to fight a disease should the dog be exposed to it. Your veterinarian will begin to vaccinate your puppy at about 6 to 8 weeks of age, usually beginning with a 4-way shot that will offer protection against distemper, parvo, hepatitis, and parainfluenza. If you live where leptospirosis is present, your pup will get a 5-way shot.
One of the most serious and dangerous viral diseases is rabies. This is a disease of the central nervous system and affects the brain, causing hallucinations, headache, and eventually death. It is spread by bite, and can spread from dogs to humans. Rabies vaccinations will prevent the disease and are given, initially, every year, then every 3 years. If you are worried about the cumulative effect of rabies vaccine on your dog, it is possible to have a blood test done to make sure that your dog is still producing antibodies against the rabies virus.

Checkups for your dog are very important. A yearly, or twice yearly, checkup will not only assure that your dog is current on all his or her vaccinations, but will enable your vet to spot problems before they become serious. A comprehensive checkup should include complete blood work that will establish a baseline for your dog’s liver and kidney functions. Should your dog become ill later, this will help your veterinarian see how much deviation has occurred.
A checkup will also allow your vet to check your dog’s teeth to see if a cleaning or extractions are needed. Plaque buildup on teeth has been linked to heart and kidney disease in dogs. You can help keep the dog’s teeth cleaner between checkup by either brushing them, or using a damp washcloth to clean them regularly.
A healthy dog will not only be a more pleasant companion, but will also remain your companion for a longer time.

How To Properly Wash Your Dog

Just like with people, you will probably find it easier to get things done with your dog if you set a regular time and day for it. Even though they canÂ’t read calendars, our furry friends have a way of keeping track, so setting up a routine for baths will make the whole process go more smoothly.
In addition to knowing when you will wash your dog, it helps to be able to have some sort of routine way of doing it each time. This will make it less time consuming and more enjoyable for you and your pet.

Before starting the water, make sure you have everything you will need close at hand. This includes dog shampoo, brush, towels, and in some case dog conditioner. The specifications of what type of shampoo and conditioner to use depend on the breed, age, and any illnesses the dog might have, among other things. This is something you should talk to your vet about, if your dog seems to be reacting badly to regular shampoo.

It relaxes your dog to brush his or her coat for a few minute before getting wet. This also makes it easier for you wash your petÂ’s full fur and skin, because it helps prevent it from matting. At this time, you can also check for ticks or any irregularities on the dogÂ’s skin that might be of concern.
Make sure your dog is thoroughly soaked before applying shampoos or other concoctions. Be careful not to get shampoo near its eyes. The easiest and most effective approach is to start at the top and work down and backwards, so start with the top of his or her head and then make your way down the back to the tail, and also down the legs. Some areas have thicker fur, so you will need to spend more time working the shampoo all the way through these parts.

Follow the directions on the bottle, of course, but pay attention to your dogÂ’s reactions as well. It is unwise to get the inside of a dogÂ’s ears wet, because it can lead to ear infections. Your best tactic here is to wipe them out with a warm, damp cloth.
Rinsing is important because if any shampoo dries onto the dogÂ’s fur or skin, it will cause itchiness that will be irritating as well as potentially harmful. Run water through your petÂ’s fur until it comes out complete clear, and donÂ’t be afraid to use some thumb and finger massage to work out any stubborn bits.
You should lay a towel out on the floor and also over your dog. First, you can get as much of the moisture off of your dog by rubbing, but then you should consider using a hair dryer. Adjust the temperature so that you wonÂ’t be making your dog too uncomfortable. Small dogs should almost always be dried this way, but big dogs usually only need help from a hair dryer in the winter.
No matter how dry the dog might be, the chances are good that it will shake itself off regardless, so be prepared. If done right, bath time can feel like a luxury for your dog, complete with massage and brushing.

Dogs, Blood Pressure, And Peace Of Mind

Owning a dog is an excellent way to improve your health and wellbeing. Dogs are well known for providing physical companionship but the friendship between a dog and its owner can also help to provide peace of mind and improve a person's general health. Negative thoughts and emotion cause a build up of stress and over time this can result in age related disease. Feeling good and positive is as important as choosing the right foods and getting the right exercise and this is where dog owners are one step ahead.
What is it about dogs that can affect your health?

Dog owners have many opportunities to exercise with their dogs. Daily walks around the neighborhood can help you maintain your own physical wellbeing as well as your dogs. Playing ball and other physical activities with your dog will also make you healthier and stronger. Your walks may also turn into social outings for both you and your dog, giving you an opportunity to meet other dog owners in your neighbourhood and at your local dog park. Taking regular walking paths, routinely will not only provide your dog with vital exercise, but also help to improve your own health by providing you with daily exercise and fresh air.

Spending time with dogs can also have unseen physical benefits. Spending time with dogs can change the rate of your blood pressure, and other biomarkers of stress such as cortisol levels in the blood. Spending time with a dog helps bring us into the present moment and thus to a degree, frees us from the stress of our minds. For a little while we can appreciate the sunset, or the comfort of sitting on the couch, or even a program on TV, just a little bit more because the time is spent with a dog. The mind induces stress by capturing our attention on repetitious thought cycles, most often with negative underlying themes. By focusing on whatÂ’s happening in the here and now – something a dog specializes at – we can dramatically reduce our stress levels.
It is common to feel alienated from other people, and while under the grips of depression or stress, it is then difficult to relate your feelings, or find the energy to articulate them into words to another person. A dog requires no explanations of you, and can sit in presence and non judgement for hours in your company. In the face of our animalÂ’s joy at the sheer fact of being, our problems will often dissolve, or are put fairly into perspective. You can share your whole story with a dog, and at the end of the tale the dog will not reaffirm it back to you, and they will never hold it against you. They will think nothing of it at all, and in doing so, might lighten the load of importance the story had burdened you with.
Neuroscience has shown us how social connections and interactions can increase our well overall well being. Mentally, a social network assists against depression and anxiety, while physically we are less impacted by age related diseases, and our immune systems are proven stronger. In the vacuum of an ideal social life, a dog provides the same stimulation to our brains, and allows us to enjoy the same mental and physical benefits of human to human interaction. And with a fraction of the drama that can often entail.

In fact, neuroscience has offered a window into how we can perceive a dogÂ’s impact on our state of mind. Alpha waves are produced when our mind is in a relaxed and focused state. People who spend time with dogs can be shown, through use of an EEG, to produce on average more alpha waves than those people who do not. With the science to back it up, we now know the importance of dogs to us, and us to them.
Science aside, anyone who has lived with a dog can attest to their own direct experience. Dogs provide fun, love and laughter. They are not pets, but part of a family.

Dogs And The Beach

The appeal of a beach holds an incredibly diverse nature of things to do with your dog. Finding the beaches around you where you can take your dog and both enjoy the outing makes it all the more worthwhile to do some prior planning. Some dog friendly beaches provide perfect off-lead areas for dogs with bushes to explore, sand to run on, water to swim in and many friends to be made. It is incredibly important that dogs have an opportunity to socialize. Dog friendly beaches provide that opportunity.

Take the time before you drive an hour or so to the beach, to find out if the beach allows dogs or not. Some beaches will have restrictions. There are beaches were no dogs are allowed, or where there are set times in which dogs are allowed to be on the beach. You can either call the local government directly or check online before going.

Some beaches will allow dogs at any time. Others will only allow dogs at specific times of the year. You should also check if your dog can use the beach while off its lead. It does not hurt to take a few minutes to check out these simple facts before you head off and be disappointed when you reach your journey's end.

Do not rely on pubic taps for accessing water. Bring a few large bottles of drinkable water with you in your car. Having water available for your dog is extremely important and do not forget to have a dish that your dog can drink from as well.

Watch for the signs of overheating and dehydration while you are enjoying your time at the beach. An easy way to check for dehydration is to pinch the skin at the back of your dog's neck and watch if it returns to its normal color. If it does not change back quickly, your dog may be seriously dehydrated. Dry gums are another sign that a dog needs a drink.

Going to the beach is exciting and it can be very overstimulating for a dog, especially if your dog has not been to the beach many times before. There are so many things for a dog to get its snout into at the beach. The sea is exciting to splash in and there is always a good roll and rub in the sand, both wet and dry. People will fascinate your dog and your dog will fascinate people who will want to stop by for a pet, especially young children. There may be flying objects like balls and Frisbees, wildlife such as birds and crabs and passing shadows of clouds that drift across the sand for your dog to chase.
Do not make any of this excitement harder on your dog than it already is. If your dog is new to the beach, choose times of the day when the beach is less busy such as early morning or late afternoon. These times will also benefit your dog's health and help with hydration.

Not everyone at the beach likes dogs. If the beach requires your dog to be on a leash, make sure you take one with you and you keep them on it and out of trouble. Bring bags to clean up after your dog has seen to its business on the beach. Some people will not care how friendly your puppy is if they stand in its business.

If you are going to a doggy friendly beach with an off leash area, you should also pack your dogs favorite ball! Beaches are a great place for dogs to practice basic manners, such as lying down when children come up to pat it or not pulling on the leash when a ball goes flying past. When you dog shows exceptional behavior, reward it with special treats that you planned and packed away in your own beach hamper.

Three Reasons Why Nothing Beats Homemade Food For Your Dog's Sensitive Stomach!

Great nutritional food for your dog's sensitive stomach is a must for your dog if you are looking for an easy and surprisingly inexpensive way on how to cut out dangerous chemicals, preservatives and dyes found in over 99% of commercial dog food brands. Because of these deplorable practices by major pet manufactures who value profits over health by pushing their notoriously malnourished processed food on unsuspecting dog owners, gives you all the reason in the world to start preparing homemade food for your dogs that have a sensitive stomach. After countless expensive trips to our local animal hospital, even our vet recommended dog food for our dog with a sensitive stomach because nothing else seemed to be working - not even costly medication. Of course weeding out the precious 1% of acceptable dog food takes needless time away from helping your dog cure his tummy troubles now. By preparing delicious homemade dog recipes that use only the ingredients you already have in your own kitchen you can cut out the deadly ingredients found in store bought commercial dog food instantly and never have to worry about what your precious pooch is eating every again. Believe it or not, you can get started making homemade food for your dogs sensitive stomach in three important steps. First, the main staple of your dog's meals should always be a lean, all natural protein source. Additionally, this protein must be rotated every so often so that your doggie has a continual selection of lean meats that actually aid in the treatment of your dogs sensitive stomach. Some of the best protein choices you can select are lamb, beef, chicken and even fish. Second, much like growing children, dogs also need their daily veggies.
Vegetables not only provide the obvious healthy selection of natural vitamins and minerals your dog needs but are key to alleviating your dog's sensitive stomach. All vegetables are acceptable and palatable with several exceptions of spicy and starchy choices such as beans, potatoes, onions, garlic, beet greens, spinach, bell peppers and chard. Third, you will need to adequately calculate the amount of food you serve to your pooch based upon your understanding of portion sizes. Every dog is different in weight, height and breed, so getting this calculation correct serves your dog extremely well especially if you are aiming to make food that helps your dog's sensitive stomach. Give him or her too much and it makes his belly worse while providing too little leaves your dog wanting and fails to meet your doggie's nutritional needs.
